I was sitting in a panel at SXSW when something clicked.

One of the speakers said that within minutes of publishing, an LLM could reference his latest podcast episode.


Not his blog.

Not his website.

His podcast.

And I immediately thought…

Wait. Why isn’t this happening for my clients?


Because here’s the reality:

Most podcasts are not optimized for how people discover content anymore.


What Is AEO (And Why It Matters for Podcasters)


Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content so AI systems like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity can select, summarize, and cite it as the answer to a user’s question.


This is very different from traditional SEO.


SEO was about:

  • Ranking on Google

  • Getting clicks

  • Driving traffic


AEO is about:

  • Being chosen

  • Being referenced

  • Being the answer itself


Because increasingly, people aren’t clicking.

They’re asking.


And in many cases, they’re getting what they need without ever leaving the search experience. This is what’s known as “zero-click search.”


Why Podcasting Is About to Have a Huge Opportunity


Here’s the gap no one is really talking about yet:

LLMs don’t listen to your podcast.

They read.


Which means…

👉 Your audio is invisible unless it’s translated into structured, usable text.


Most podcasts:

  • Have weak show notes

  • Don’t answer clear questions

  • Aren’t structured for extraction


So when someone asks:

“How do I build self-trust?”

AI tools aren’t pulling from podcasts.


They’re pulling from blogs, articles, and structured content that clearly answers that question.


So Where Does That Leave Your Podcast?


Right now, most podcasts are:

👉 Great conversations

👉 Poor answer sources


And that’s the shift.


If you want your podcast to show up in AI-generated answers, your content needs to evolve from:


Conversation → Answerable Content


How AEO Actually Works (In Simple Terms)


When someone asks a question, LLMs:

  1. Interpret the intent behind the question

  2. Look for content that closely matches that language

  3. Extract clear, structured answers

  4. Synthesize and cite the best sources


They are not ranking 10 blue links.

They are selecting what to say.


And they prioritize:

  • Clarity

  • Structure

  • Relevance to the question

  • Trustworthiness


Not cleverness. Not creativity. Not vibes.


The Biggest Mistake Podcasters Are Making


They treat show notes like a recap.

But for AEO, your show notes are the product.


This is the part that gets:

  • Indexed

  • Parsed

  • Quoted

  • Referenced


If your show notes don’t clearly answer a question…

Your podcast won’t either (in the eyes of AI).


What to Do Instead (Without Overhauling Everything)


You don’t need to reinvent your entire workflow.

But you do need to shift how you structure your episodes.

Here’s where I would start:


1. Title Your Episodes Like Questions


Instead of:

Building Self Trust and Intuition

Try:

How Do You Build Self Trust and Strengthen Intuition?


Why?

Because AEO favors content that mirrors how people actually ask questions.


2. Add a Clear Answer at the Top of Your Show Notes


2–4 sentences.

Direct. Simple. No fluff.

This is what gets pulled first.


3. Build Out a Short FAQ Section


Think:

  • How do I build intuition?

  • Why don’t I trust myself?

  • What blocks self-trust?


Each answer should be concise and clear.


4. Use Timestamps That Answer Questions


Not:

(12:32) Intuition discussion

But:

(12:32) How to Start Trusting Yourself Again


Each one becomes a searchable entry point.


5. Speak in Clear, Quotable Insights


This one is subtle, but powerful.


Encourage your hosts and guests to say things like:

“Self-trust is built through small, repeated decisions.”


That’s something AI can actually use.


Why This Matters Even More for Health, Fitness, and Wellness Podcasts


This is your moment.


Because people are constantly asking:

  • How do I heal my gut?

  • Why am I always tired?

  • How do I lose weight sustainably?

  • What supplements should I take?


These are question-driven categories.

Which means AEO is a massive opportunity.


The podcasts that structure their content to answer these questions clearly…

Will become the ones that get referenced.


The Shift I’m Seeing (And Why I’m Paying Attention)


We are moving from:


👉 Being discovered


to


👉 Being chosen as the answer


And those are two very different strategies.

The podcasters who figure this out early will have a massive advantage.


Not because they’re louder.

But because they’re clearer.


Final Thought


If someone asked ChatGPT a question in your niche…

Would your podcast be part of the answer?

Or would it be invisible?
